CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change,Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), CGIAR, Global Research Alliance
Description: The Paris Agreement necessitates updating Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) every five years with progressive ambition. Kenya plans to revise its NDC in June 2020, supported by the State Department for Livestock, UNIQUE forestry and land use, CCAFS, and GRA. The livestock sub-sector's alignment with Kenya's policies, such as the Big Four Agenda and Agriculture Sector Growth and Transformation Strategy (ASGTS), is highlighted. Livestock emerges as the major source of GHG emissions, particularly enteric fermentation. Despite progress in the dairy industry, implementing Kenya's Climate-Smart Agriculture Strategy and dairy-specific NAMA faces challenges due to limited financial support. The study identifies pathways to NDC enhancement in the livestock sector, including assessment of adaptation and mitigation options, a Livestock Sub-Sector Climate Change Action Plan, improved monitoring and evaluation, and enhancing MRV of livestock GHG emissions. The report underscores gaps and recommends policies to bolster the livestock sector's contribution to climate change ambitions.
