Abstract: Kenya has recently enacted policies seeking to expand electricity access through the use of renewable energy sources. This paper discusses the regulatory environment, policies, and tariffs used by the government for this effort, focusing on two important programs: the feed in tariff scheme and the creation of the Rural Electrification Authority. These policies and the use of clear targets have increased access and the use of renewable energy. Current challenges, including access to financing and expansion to the rural poor, are also discussed.
