Abstract: On 25 September 2015,the United Nations adopted a set of global goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. For Kenya, which co-chaired the UN Open Working Group for Sustainable Development, the goals are crucial for the well-being of the nation as a whole but particularly for its indigenous peoples. In its Vision 2030,Kenya aspires to be ?a globally competitive and prosperous nation with a high quality of life by 2030 through transforming itself into a newly industrialising,middle-income country that provides a high quality of life to all its citizens by 2030,in a clean and secure environment.? Both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Kenya Vision 2030 clearly place humans at the centre of development,in line with Article 2 of the 1986 Declaration on the Right to Development.
