Abstract: GHG emissions are associated with all stages of the sanitation value chain and contribute to 2-6% of global methane (CH4) emissions and 1-3% of global nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions.1-3 Container-based sanitation (CBS) are systems where toilets collect human excreta in sealable, removable cartridges that are transported to treatment facilities when full. Replacement of anaerobic processes with aerobic processes and production of resource recovery products has potential to mitigate GHG emissions.
