Abstract: This annual publication details CJGEA’s environmental justice efforts throughout Kenya from July 2022 to June 2023. The report documents strategic litigation, including the high-profile Owino Uhuru toxic waste case, showcasing its role in community empowerment and judicial accountability. It emphasizes the organization’s work with land and environmental defenders (LEDs), civil society networks, and county-level actors to promote inclusive environmental governance. The report provides in-depth coverage of advocacy efforts targeting mining accountability in Kwale and the implementation of Kenya’s Community Development Agreement (CDA) regulations. CJGEA conducted capacity-building workshops for vulnerable communities, promoted media engagement to amplify affected voices, and expanded its regional footprint through the East Africa Rights of Nature and Governance (EROG) coalition. The document also outlines policy recommendations that span enforcement, data transparency, and gender inclusion in extractive governance. It offers a replicable model of grassroots-led, legally grounded environmental activism.
