Abstract: This policy brief explores the integration of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into degraded mining landscapes in Kwale County. Using qualitative surveys, field data, and community engagement results, it documents successful local restoration of dunes, wetlands, and forest fragments post-mining. However, governance gaps are identified?no NbS-specific budgeting, regulatory incoherence, and weak community incentives. The brief proposes actionable reforms including fiscal support for NbS, monitoring benchmarks, policy harmonization between mining and forestry sectors, and incorporation of Indigenous knowledge into restoration design. The study finds strong public awareness and willingness among residents to engage in ecological stewardship if empowered by law and resources. The brief strengthens national NbS discourse, providing targeted recommendations for replication in other extractive zones.
