Reconciliation Of Charcoal Production And Preservation Of Biological Diversity In Kenya

Download

Abstract: This sector note analyzes the relationship between charcoal production and biodiversity preservation in Kenya?s ASAL regions, focusing on Kajiado County. It recognizes charcoal as a key household energy source and income stream while exposing the challenges of informal production, unsustainable harvesting practices, and ecological degradation. The report examines the charcoal value chain and critiques weak enforcement of existing regulatory instruments like the Charcoal Rules (2009). It suggests actionable interventions such as introducing sustainable production technologies, expanding the use of alternative fuels, encouraging biodiversity-friendly income sources, and implementing forest certification. Community involvement and clear governance pathways are emphasized throughout. By spotlighting the complexity of charcoal economics and ecological trade-offs, the document encourages a balanced approach that supports livelihoods without compromising environmental sustainability.
