Just Sustainabilities: Lessons From The Lake Turkana Wind Power Project In Kenya

Abstract: This academic article uses critical discourse analysis to evaluate the sustainability claims surrounding the Lake Turkana Wind Power project. It examines how the narrative of green development is mobilized by state and corporate actors to justify large-scale energy infrastructure in marginalized regions. Drawing on stakeholder interviews and secondary sources, the author assesses procedural, distributive, and restorative justice dimensions. Particular emphasis is placed on failures in community engagement, land restitution, and benefit sharing. The article critiques the neoliberal logic underpinning Kenya?s renewable energy sector, highlighting tensions between capitalist expansion and ecological integrity. Alternative frameworks rooted in commons-based land governance, participatory justice, and co-produced sustainability transitions are proposed. The work challenges dominant policy discourses and provides a roadmap for ethical energy planning.
